Delivering to VOD
Supplying the VOD Revolution
In 2020, the DPP published an in-depth analysis of the workflows and formats involved in delivering content to VOD platforms.
With a lack of commonality between organisations, it unearthed a picture of chaos, complexity, and inefficiency. However, a clear path to a more efficient future also emerged.

Delivery to VOD
Taking what we learned from this research, we launched a collaborative technical project aiming to drive a more common approach to the formats and workflows used in delivering content to VOD platforms. The project set out to deliver solutions to the top two problem areas identified in the research.
Metadata & Avails
A multitude of complex and custom metadata formats are currently in use for delivering VOD content. We will explore the common options available, and understand where gaps exist. And we'll contribute towards the ongoing development of key specifications, such as the MovieLabs Digital Distribution Framework.
Avails is the term used to describe the commercial availability of a piece of content. If avails are expressed in a standard format, processes can be automated and supply chain efficiency can be increased. However, the research indicated this is not the norm, and that management of avails is a problem area for many companies.
We will work with DPP members to encourage a move from custom spreadsheets to common formats, such as EMA Avails.
Onboarding
Onboarding is a multi-step process requiring the distributor to build multiple profiles, create & validate test files, and configure automated systems. These steps are not always clearly defined, leading to mis-communication and delays.
Based on the input of major VOD platforms, content producers, and distributors, we published Guidance DPP007: Best Practices for Content Supplier Onboarding.
